Living Abroad

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Living Abroad?

Having lived abroad in several countries I wanted to share my thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of living abroad to give you a real picture of what it is like to move and live abroad and what does living abroad mean.

It is important to look at the advantages and disadvantages of moving to another country very carefully to make sure that you’re making the right decision for you..

Living abroad is a wonderful experience but it does come with its challenges and has advantages  and disadvantages

Here I will list some  pros and cons of living abroad  so that hopefully it will help you to make the right decision as to whether living in another country is right for you .

Pros of living abroad

It allows you to develop your career

Living abroad will enable you to go to overseas colleges or work in foreign companies. It exposes you to experiences you would not get if you were living and working at home. If you are living in developed countries, you get a chance to use equipment fitted with the latest technology. It increases your expertise and expands your skills.

Moving to another country can give  your career big lift as it can open new opportunities and  possibilities It also  i gives you the opportunity to start over.

For example, I didn’t go to University to  study to be a teacher as I had hoped ,but  when I moved to Egypt  and I saw the opportunities that teaching English as a foreign language could offer me as an English Native , and using my training in childcare health and social development   I grabbed that opportunity to create a new career for me.

It was challenging in the beginning but has turned out to be very rewarding and gives me an income to live on ..

It enhances your communication skills

When you get a chance to live abroad, you get an opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds. It gives you the opportunity to learn a new language and enhances your communication skills and master a new language.

You will meet many interesting people both local and other foreigners living there ,This will not only be a wonderful experience and you will learn the language first hand in an international setting .

You will be able to immerse yourself into another culture

Depending on where you come from, there are stereotypes that you develop about people and their culture. But when you live abroad, you interact with the same people and begin to understand them. You start to realize that the things you heard about them were not correct. It gives insight into their culture and makes you know them even better.

To truly get to know another culture is something that is not easily achieved by just visiting that country.

You will experience the local way of life every day. This will give you such an amazing in-depth experience of the culture and the way of life of the  people who live there .

You will be very motivated

You can only live abroad if you are a self-starter. Finding work and working in a foreign country confirms that you are a highly motivated person. It also shows that you are adaptable and mature.  Employers like outgoing employees. When you get out of a comfort zone to live in a foreign country, it tells a lot about your character and attitude.

Living abroad will give you such great motivation because you are doing something you only dreamt about before You have achieved your goal!  This in turn will give you more energy and determination that you need to live successfully abroad

Cons of living abroad

Challenges in adapting

The first challenge people who live abroad encounter is to adjust to the culture of their host country.  It is difficult to get used to the host countries’ currency or driving on their roads. Also, it is a daunting task to adapt to their customs. Lastly, it may be difficult for you to adjust to the new cuisine and unfamiliar conventions.

Feeling homesick is a significant challenge for people who choose to live and work abroad. If your home is thousands of miles away, and your financial situation does not allow you to visit them frequently, it may take more time before you settle down.

New weather patterns

Unless you are moving to a neighboring country, you will have problems adjusting to the new weather in a foreign country. For instance, if you’re you are moving from Africa to Europe, you will get challenges adapting to the winter and summer periods. If you are not used to low temperatures, you must be prepared for them during the winter. Similarly, some countries experience very high temperatures during the summer. It may be a big challenge for some people.

Is living abroad worth it?

Let’s take a look at whether living in a foreign country is worth it or not.

It is important that you understand the pros and cons, so make sure that you also look at the benefits of living abroad as well as the reasons not to move abroad, because living in another country is not for everyone.

Living and moving abroad is upheaval and challenge in your life

You’re going to be faced with many different changes and you will need to be able to create everything from scratch. There will be so many decisions that you need to make on a daily basis

So make sure that you put your own personal pros and cons about moving abroad and  living away from your home country.

During my time abroad  I have  had some wonderful experiences but also some difficult times  and I have met so many people from all over the world that i would have otherwise never have met

It takes a certain kind of person to be successful at living overseas. You will  need to have a lot of flexibility and patience.

You will be starting from the beginning again ,which is exciting for some people but very daunting for others.

What does it mean to live abroad?

They say that the journey is more exciting than the end result when you’re trying to reach a goal. I think the same goes for moving and living abroad…The whole experience from the planning stage until you actually make it to  your chosen destination

How do you cope with living abroad?

Do not be afraid of failures.  This is part of life , just try to learn from them and move on

Although living abroad takes you away from your  comfort zone, it is rewarding and well worth it . If you can overcome the initial challenges, you are likely to live abroad successfully.

Before you decide  look at the pros and cons of living abroad, If you decide to go ahead get ready for a new life and  prepare yourself for some  unforgettable experiences and memories

The City of York

Imagine a city with Roman roots and a Viking past, where ancient walls surround contemporary independent shops and vibrant eateries and there’s a festival for every month of the year. Welcome to York !

The city, split by the River Ouse, is best-known for its 800-year-old minster and The Shambles, a picturesque cobbled lane dating from the Middle Ages.York is an ideal size for exploring on foot, and is surrounded by some of England’s most beautiful countryside; it is only just over two hours by train from London or Edinburgh

.Few cities in the world can rival York for history and character. A picturesque riverside city encircled by ancient walls, York has a fascinating story that goes back 2,000 years

You can not go to york without visiting the Minster. Dating back to medieval times, this splendid Church of England cathedral features magnificent 14th- and 15th-century stained glass, stonework and elaborate tombs. You have the opportunity to explore underground chambers and follow in the footsteps of Roman Soldiers If you have the energy you can climb the 275 steps of the central tower, and from there you will be at the highest point in the city and be rewarded with amazing views.

Afterwards why not treat yourself to a nice afternoon tea. The place to go is  the most famous tea rooms in all Yorkshire …..Bettys Tea Rooms A cross between a traditional English tea room and a sophisticated Swiss cafe, with beautiful interiors inspired by the Queen Mary ocean liner,   Bettys is like no place else for afternoon tea and they have an amazing   selection of sweets and light meals

The Shambles is an old street in the city with overhanging timber framed  buildings, some dating back as far as the fourteenth century. It is one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe and  although none of the original shop-fronts have survived from medieval times, some properties still have exterior wooden shelves, reminders of when cuts of meat were served from the open window. Today, the beautiful old buildings have been restored and now house cheerful cafes, quirky boutiques and even a coin & stamp dealers York’s most famous shopping street was  once lined with Butchers’ shops, today the smells are rather more pleasant with aromas from the chocolate, fudge and sweet shops, clothes and accessories and gift shops.

In the evening if you  are feeling brave and like an adventure you  could  travel back in time, cross the centuries and experience the stories that make up the hidden and blood chilling history of York’s ghostly tradition.Be guided along narrow passageways and dark streets  to investigate bloodcurdling tales of scandal and death – of phantoms, ghosts, apparitions and supernatural stories of the strange and macabre The tours usually last around ninety minutes and it is an experience not to be missed !

There is something for everyone in York, whether you are a history buff or just want to to enjoy the wonderful cosmopolitan atmosphere and winding streets where you will find something interesting around  every corner. And if you decide to stay longer there are many hotels and guest houses to suit all budgets So if ever  you find yourself in England be sure to put York on your must see list !!

Book Recommendation

My last post was all about the enjoyment of reading and how it is beneficial. So today i want to share with you one of my favorite books  at the moment. It was recommended to me by chance in a lesson when we were discussing things that have influenced or motivated us. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did By the way ,in case you don’t know an alchemist is a person who transforms or creates something through a seemingly magical process.

The Alchemist is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho that was first published in 1988. Originally written in Portuguese, it became a widely translated international bestseller

It  is a book  which tells us never to lose hope. Maybe the  Secret of its success  is perhaps based on this and it continues to change the lives of people worldwide . It teaches us that when a person really desires something, the whole universe will conspire to help that person realise his dream.

Paulo Coelho’s masterpiece tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found.

Believing a recurring dream to be prophetic, he asks a fortune teller  in a nearby town about its meaning. The woman interprets the dream as a prophecy telling the boy that he will discover a treasure at the Egyptian Pyramids

Early into his journey, he meets  the king of Salem, who tells him to sell his sheep, so as to travel to Egypt.

Early in his arrival to Africa, a man who claims to be able to take Santiago to the pyramids instead robs him of what money he had made from selling his sheep. Santiago then embarks on a long path of working for a crystal merchant so as to make enough money to fulfill his personal legend and go to the pyramids.

Along the way, the boy meets an Englishman who has come in search of an alchemist and continues his travels in his new companion’s company. When they reach an oasis, Santiago meets and falls in love with an Arabian girl named Fatima, to whom he proposes marriage. She promises to do so only after he completes his journey. Frustrated at first, he later learns that true love will not stop nor must one sacrifice to it one’s personal destiny, since to do so robs it of truth.

The boy then encounters a wise alchemist who also teaches him to realize his true self. Together, they risk a journey through the territory of warring tribes, where the boy is forced to demonstrate his oneness with “the soul of the world” by turning himself into a simoom before he is allowed to proceed. When he begins digging within sight of the pyramids, he is robbed yet again, but accidentally learns from the leader of the thieves that the treasure he sought all along was in the ruined church where he had his original dream.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life’s path, and, above all, following our dreams

*Simoon… noun   …a hot, dry, dust-laden wind blowing in the desert, especially in Arabia.

Ebooks V Paper books

In these days of fast living and technology ,for me, there is nothing better than curling up with a good book and getting lost in its pages. Not for me are Ebooks or Kindles I love to be able to hold the book and smell the pages as you get lost in the story and are transported to another world Scientists also seem to agree with me

Research has shown that people who read paper books absorb and remember the plot more easily than Ebook readers. According to a study that was presented in Italy in 2014, print readers also scored higher in other areas, such as empathy, immersion in the book, and understanding of the narrative. Scientists believe this effect is related to the tactile sensation of holding a book in your hands.Seeing and feeling how much progress you’ve made in the story, by  the simple action of turning the  pages  of the book, can help readers feel like they’re unfolding the story—both literally and figuratively. Plus, with a print book, it’s easier to go back and confirm information you may be unsure of without losing your place and having to scroll or click back on your mobile device or tablet.

They help children become better readers too,a  study of young children between the ages of three and five revealed that kids had lower comprehension of the story when their parents read to them from an e-book as opposed to a print book. Researchers theorize this arises because children get distracted by the electronic device and have a harder time focusing on the story itself. In another study, students who had read a short story on a e-reader were less engaged and had a harder time remembering the exact order of events.

Paper books are also easier on the eyes.In this day and age many of the jobs today require you to stare at a computer screen all day and this can cause  eye strain. Electronic books can cause screen fatigue, which may lead to blurred vision, redness, dryness, and irritation. With print books, you don’t have to worry about any of that.

Reading a book can also  help you sleep better When you’re winding down for the night, reading from a screen or scrolling through a social media app on your phone are bad ideas the blue light from your screen upset  your melatonin levels and circadian cycles, making it harder for you to fall asleep and making you feel groggier when you wake up. On the other hand  engagement and brain activity that comes with reading can help you drift off to sleep when you’re having trouble. So if you’re hoping to get a good night’s rest, stick with print.

Studies have also shown that books can make us happier, inspire us to travel, and encourage us to make life-changing decisions. So don’t feel guilty the next time you spend a little more than you’d planned at the bookstore: Science says it’s good for you
